Gold Diggers centres round an ageing miner who dies and leaves behind his two wives and children. The show explores their individual relationships against the ambition of acquiring wealth against all odds. A love story plays out between Big Boy and his pregnant girlfriend, while hostel politics is explored through a wealth of colourful characters. The series cuts between peddling gold to dirty jewellers, to the dying crops in the homestead.
The series launched in South Africa in 2015 in the 21:00 slot on e.tv, and grew the timeslot with over 20% against the long running Soap, Generations, on the national broadcaster. The best performance for the series was when Generations got pre-empted by a soccer match and Gold Diggers more than doubled its viewership.
The production features Mbongeni Ngema, Clementine Mosimane, Tina Jaxa, and ZuluBoy. It premiered on 10 August 2015 with very successful 8 month long first season. The series is targeted at the middle-income market (LSM 5-6), but has a broad appeal in the LSM 2-4 and LSM 7-10 markets.
