Zabalaza

About This Project

Zabalaza, which means struggle or hustle, is a three season Telenovela that follows the lives of the Marapama family (formerly Cele) set in Dube, Soweto and Braamfontein.

Greed, betrayal, secrets, love, misfortune and tragedy centres this typical family next door. Their world is a layered representation of a South African landscape that includes the very rich and powerful, the upwardly middle class and the struggling poor.

Some characters will heed the call to attend to their personal demons, while others will deny it – finding themselves left with the question: Is power, fame and money worth selling one’s soul for? And when their business and personal lives collide, some will question if it is worth the sacrifice

South Africa’s first “lokshin soap”, Zabalaza first aired on 6 May 2013. Broadcast for a total of 2 years 10 months, Zabalaza appealed primally to black African auidences, LSM 6 – 10, and scored an average of 400 000 viewers per day and an Audience Rating of 5.
